On the 8th October the Association held a seminar and reception for its Greek based Members. The seminar was in the form of a role play and covered a number of legal issues arising from a long term time charterparty. In excess of 135 Member representatives attended the seminar which was held at the Athens Hilton.
The seminar involved a fictitious ship the Narwhal which was ordered to proceed through the Gulf of Aden. Questions concerning the owner's obligation to comply with this order were considered in detail. The ship then suffered engine damage as a result of defective bunkers having been supplied to the ship. Lengthy repairs were required which eventually led to the charterer terminating the fixture. The seminar concluded with a mediation in an effort to resolve their differences.
The cast of characters included Nigel Brooks who took the part of the owner, with Cedric Chatteleyn playing the charterer. Alan Mackinnon, Marc Jackson the (expensive) lawyers, with Alexandra Couvadelli playing the part of the owner's Defence Club. Mr Tom Hutcheson of the Eastern Mediterranean Mediation Association (EMMA) was the external mediator. Our Nick Milner as narrator kept things flowing and the cast in check.
As the photos show, the seminar was held in good spirits with the owner and charterer eventually reaching a successful resolution.
